BATA Special Interest Groups code of conduct

The British Assistive Technology Association is committed to campaigning for the rights of those who use, or could benefit from the use of assistive technology. We are determined to support AT users, and those who dedicate their time to supporting those AT users.

BATA is a membership organisation that has a very broad membership, including a large number of commercial organisations who produce, provide or recommend products or services to help disabled or cognitively impaired people fulfill their full potential.

We, as an organisation, do not support, promote or actively highlight any particular products or services above any other. We do not promote products or services of our members above products or services of non member organisations. We simply do not favour or promote any product or service.

As part of our efforts to ensure AT users are supported as fully and comprehensively as possible, we have been asked by members to provide information about products or services that are new, or that are 'newsworthy'.

What this means, is that there have been and will continue to be posts about particular products, services and events that are deemed newsworthy. The information shared will help our members to stay abreast of new developments, with the ultimate aim of ensuring they support the AT users in the best way possible from as informed a position as possible.

BATA in no way endorses the products, services or events that will be shared.

For a post to be allowed, it must be deemed to be newsworthy by the chair of the SIG in which it will be posted and another member of the BATA council. This arbitration process is completely independent.

The agreed code of conduct for such commercial posts is as follows:

  • Commercial information for our purposes consists of promotion of any goods, services or events.
  • The subject must be “newsworthy”, not just a newsletter, advert or product description.
  • A maximum of 4 commercial emails per company per annum will be considered.
  • Multiple companies cannot promote the same product or event.
  • Promotional emails to be submitted to the SIG chair who will post to the SIG if it is deemed to meet the criteria.
  • Emails will be posted on a first-come first-served basis.

The simple rules of thumb are to keep on-topic and be respectful of others, but to be clear we thought it useful to spell out a few things that are outside what we’d accept. Our Special Interest Groups are designed to help people learn more about Assistive Technology and the resources available to those with disabilities and long term health conditions, and we want people to have a good experience when they are here. Anything that supports this aim is encouraged, provided it does not violate these terms of use that we’ve put together.
